Books on Roughlee

Roughlee is a delightful little hamlet set alongside the gentle stream of Pendle Water, near Barley.  It housed the first school in Pendle, opened in 1852.  There used to be a small spinning mill at Roughlee which had the usual mill reservoir. This reservoir was a local attraction for many years, after the mill closed - it was used as a boating lake and for swimming in the summer months.  Roughlee also had a chapel in which John Wesley preached, but this has long since gone.

Roughlee Hall

It was once common belief that the famous Pendle Witch, Alice Nutter, once lived here - this is no longer believed to be true.
