Fence is a small village named after the type of fenced enclosure that the stags were kept in after hunting in Pendle Forest.  Used to be the home of Old Chattox, one of the famous Pendle Witches.  There are many old houses in Fence.  Ashlar House was the place where the Pendle Witches were taken in 1612 after their arrest.  Fence House, on the opposite side of the road, is a 15th century building with interesting chimneys.  In the 19th century Hoarstones House (at the end of a long driveway opposite Hoarstones Avenue), built in 1547, had a major re-modeling.   It was the scene of a rather dangerous hoax in the 17th century.  Seventeen people were arrested as suspected witches and brought here.  They were all found guilty and were only saved from execution after the hoax was discovered.
