In November 2000, the new Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway web site went online - and excellent source of information about the history, news, time tables, special events, and much more!  Do go and check out the site for up to date information.

Getting there

Embsay is situated 1.5 miles north of Skipton, about 30 minutes drive from Pendle.

Embsay Station is about 2 miles from Skipton town center, and is signposted off the A59 Skipton by-pass.  Bolton Abbey Station is situated on the A59 about 800 meters towards Skipton from the Bolton Abbey roundabout.

Bolton Abbey Extension

The long awaited extension to the Embsay railway happened late 1997.  The line now runs to Bolton Abbey station.  The station at Bolton Abbey is a reconstruction of the original and has refreshment rooms, a gift shop, toilets and a large car park (catering for coaches too).

The new station is about 1.5 miles away from the ruins of 12th century Bolton Abbey itself - an excellent place for walking and picnicking, alongside the River Wharfe.

As of August 2000, plans are afoot to extend the line into Skipton as soon as certain contractual and financial details have been resolved.

Embsay Station

The longest standing part of the railway hosts a varied collection of engines and rolling stock.  There's an excellent gift shop with a huge range of railway books and models and memorabilia, run by knowledgeable staff.

Trains run every Sunday throughout the year.  Trains also run several times a day, most days (except Friday) in June, July and August.  A cut down timetable runs in April, May, and September.  For timetables either call +44 1756 795189 or click here.
